Breast lift in NYC: what it does, and when implants are part of it

A breast lift, or mastopexy, raises and reshapes the breasts. It is the operation many people mean when they say they want their shape back after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, and it is often confused with an augmentation. The difference matters, because it decides which operation you ask about.

Breast Augmentation NYC is a free referral service, not a clinic or medical practice. A request sent from this page goes to an independent plastic surgery office in New York City, which sets its own prices and is responsible for its own care.

Lift, implants, or both

Cleveland Clinic describes a breast lift as an operation that lifts, reshapes and tightens the breasts without changing their size. ASPS says breast augmentation adds volume but does not correct significant sagging, which may need a lift. So the question is what you want to change:

Only a surgeon who examines you can say which suits you. It is fair to ask each surgeon why they suggest one and not another.

The incision patterns

Cleveland Clinic names four incision patterns for a lift:

  • Crescent
  • Donut
  • Vertical, often called a lollipop
  • Inverted T, often called an anchor

Each places the scar differently. Ask which pattern the surgeon suggests for you and why, and ask them to sketch where the scar would sit, so you can compare two surgeons’ plans side by side.

Cleveland Clinic says the scars are permanent but fade. Ask how the office looks after scars while they heal, and how long it takes before you see how a scar has settled.

Surgery and recovery

Cleveland Clinic gives these general ranges for a lift on its own. Adding implants changes them, and your surgeon will give you your own timeline.

StageGeneral range (Cleveland Clinic)
The operationUsually 1 to 2 hours, outpatient
DiscomfortAbout 2 weeks
Desk work and walkingAbout 1 week
Vigorous activityLimited for up to 6 weeks
A regular braAbout 8 weeks

In New York, plan the trip home: you will need someone to take you, not the subway on your own. Plan the follow-up visits too, and ask where they take place.

How long a lift lasts

Results show at once, Cleveland Clinic says, and last several years. Aging, pregnancy and weight change all affect them. If you plan a pregnancy, ask the surgeon whether to wait.

Risks of a lift

Cleveland Clinic lists asymmetry, changes in sensation, poor healing, loss of the nipple or areola, possible inability to breastfeed, and blood clots. Ask each surgeon how often they see these and how they handle them.

Risks the FDA describes

If your plan includes implants, the FDA’s implant warnings apply as well.

On October 27, 2021 the FDA announced new requirements for every breast implant sold in the U.S.: a boxed warning in the labeling, a patient decision checklist that the surgeon must go over with you before surgery and that you both sign, a patient device card, and updated advice on screening for rupture. Sale of implants is restricted to providers and facilities that use the checklist.

  • Not lifetime devices. The FDA says: “Breast implants are not considered lifetime devices.” The longer you have them, the more likely complications become, and some complications need more surgery.
  • BIA-ALCL. Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma is a T-cell lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system, that the FDA says “appears more often in patients with textured breast implants.” It is not breast cancer.
  • Other cancers in the capsule. The FDA has reported squamous cell carcinoma and other lymphomas in the scar capsule around implants, with textured and smooth, saline and silicone implants. The FDA believes these may be rare; their cause, incidence and risk factors are not known.
  • Systemic symptoms. The FDA says: “Symptoms such as fatigue, memory loss, rash, ‘brain fog,’ and joint pain may be associated with breast implants.” These symptoms, often called breast implant illness, are still being studied.
  • Silent rupture. For silicone gel implants, the FDA says MRI is the most effective way to find a rupture that causes no symptoms, and ultrasound is an acceptable alternative.

What a breast lift costs

ASPS gives a 2024 national range of $6,500 to $11,000 for the surgeon’s fee alone for a breast lift, and its 2023 national average was $6,816. Anesthesia, the facility and other costs are extra, implants too if you add them, and each office sets its own prices. The cost guide shows how to read a quote.

Questions to ask about a lift

  • Which incision pattern do you suggest for me, and why?
  • Would a lift alone give the shape I want, or do you suggest implants too?
  • If both, in one operation or two, and why?
  • How might this affect breastfeeding later?
  • Where do you operate, and who gives the anesthesia?
  • What does the quote include?

Checking the surgeon

Ask whether the surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), and check it on the ABPS lookup. ABPS is a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties. Then check the surgeon’s New York license on the NYSED Office of the Professions verification search.

Questions people ask

Does a breast lift make breasts bigger?

No. Cleveland Clinic says a lift reshapes and tightens without changing size. Volume comes from implants or fat.

Can implants fix sagging?

ASPS says augmentation does not correct significant sagging, which may need a lift. A surgeon who examines you can say.

How long is recovery from a breast lift?

Cleveland Clinic gives about a week for desk work and walking, vigorous activity limited for up to 6 weeks, and a regular bra at about 8 weeks.

Will there be scars?

Yes. Cleveland Clinic says the scars are permanent but fade. Their length depends on the incision pattern.

How much is a breast lift?

ASPS gives a 2024 national range of $6,500 to $11,000 for the surgeon’s fee alone. Other costs are extra.

Should I wait until after having children?

Pregnancy can affect the result, Cleveland Clinic notes. Ask the surgeon about your own plans.
